AI Customer ServiceOlá sepulkrisiun. Please do not use capacitors or resistors from an old amp to try to make a new amp sound vintage. Old capacitors are likely to fail and cause expensive
AI Customer ServiceThe quick answer is that by adding a series resistor you current limit the supply. If you think about how the capacitor works it becomes clear. Under no load conditions,
AI Customer ServiceThe point of power supply capacitors in an amplifier is to provide a backup "reserve" for transient peaks. At some point, in any amplifier, you can tax the power supply

AI Customer ServiceIn terms of improving the sound qualilty, a second pair of caps connected via inductors across the first pair does a better job than simply adding capacitance. The amp
AI Customer ServiceAdding more* to a low power amp does little as the amp can only put out so much. It may have an effect at the extremes of operation (volume @ 11) but likely not audible. Further, too much capacitance can burn out the diode bridge and possibly even the power transformer if those cannot handle the capacitor inrush current when the amp is turned on.
It didn't turn into a whole new amp. One improvement in electrolytic capacitor design might be esr- equivalent series resistance. Replacing with caps that have low esr means that the new capacitors can dump their power more quickly into the circuit. This will allow for better transients if the circuit can handle it.
The amp may only make rated power under static tone generated conditions and not dynamically from music. This would be especially so with program material that has lots of synthesized "bass". So you may hear an improvement upping capacitance to where it should have been to begin with.
Basically, any electrolytic type of capacitor. Definitely the filter caps in the high voltage & bias supply's, and cathode bypass cap in a cathode biased amp. Any preamp cathode bypass electrolytics would be less likely to fail but you might as well replace them too while you're at it.
Further, too much capacitance can burn out the diode bridge and possibly even the power transformer if those cannot handle the capacitor inrush current when the amp is turned on. *However... I won't discount that there could have been a bass improvement.
Using large filter capacitors in the power supply is part and parcel of the "highly regulated power supply" theory of amplfier design where you attempt to hold the rail voltages constant with no sag, regardless of the current demands placed on the amplfier.
