AI Customer ServiceThis mini-review discusses the recent trends in electrode materials for Li-ion batteries. Elemental doping and coatings have modified many of the commonly used electrode materials, which are used either as anode or cathode materials. This has led to the high diffusivity of Li ions, ionic mobility and conductivity apart from specific capacity.
Lithium metal was used as a negative electrode in LiClO 4, LiBF 4, LiBr, LiI, or LiAlCl 4 dissolved in organic solvents. Positive-electrode materials were found by trial-and-error investigations of organic and inorganic materials in the 1960s.
Graphite and its derivatives are currently the predominant materials for the anode. The chemical compositions of these batteries rely heavily on key minerals such as lithium, cobalt, manganese, nickel, and aluminium for the positive electrode, and materials like carbon and silicon for the anode (Goldman et al., 2019, Zhang and Azimi, 2022).
Lithium layered cathode materials, such as LCO, LMO, LFP, NCA, and NMC, find application in Li-ion batteries. Among these, LCO, LMO, and LFP are the most widely employed cathode materials, along with various other lithium-layered metal oxides (Heidari and Mahdavi, 2019, Zhang et al., 2014).
In particular, the recent trends on material researches for advanced lithium-ion batteries, such as layered lithium manganese oxides, lithium transition metal phosphates, and lithium nickel manganese oxides with or without cobalt, are described.
Energy storage is considered a key technology for successful realization of renewable energies and electrification of the powertrain. This review discusses the lithium ion battery as the leading electrochemical storage technology, focusing on its main components, namely electrode (s) as active and electrolyte as inactive materials.
