AI Customer ServiceA study released on March 20 by Mexican non-profit Casa Cem and US environmental campaign group Occupational Knowledge International (OKI) alleges used lead batteries exported from the US to Mexico are causing extensive contamination around recycling plants.
“Allowing the tsunami of lead acid batteries to continue to be exported to Mexican facilities sentences those working in or living near these facilities to a lifetime of increased lead burden in their bodies,” RSR chief executive Robert E. Finn said in a Dec. 21 letter to the Commission for Environmental Cooperation.
These women tended to be of lower socioeconomic status than mothers in other hospital types. The researchers conclude that the tightening of the US lead regulation induced the relocation of battery recycling and caused negative health spillovers in Mexico.
Mexico is still failing to adequately address the environmental and occupational risks of lead, making it a haven for the recycling of spent lead-acid batteries from Canada and the United States.
According to the findings of the US-based organisation Occupational Knowledge International and Fronteras Comunes, airborne lead emissions from lead battery recycling plants in Mexico are approximately 20 times higherthan those in the United States and the blood lead levels of Mexican workers in the sector are as much as five times higher.
According to OKI, Clarios was responsible for 68% of all US used lead battery exports to Mexico in 2021, the year in which the firm shut its Florence Recycling Center in South Carolina.
