Boasting Africa's largest lithium reserves and ranking sixth globally, Zimbabwe strategically places itself among leading lithium-producing countries like Chile, Australia, China, Argentina, and Brazil, underscoring its pivotal role in meeting the escalating demands of a progressively electrified and sustainable global economy.
Zimbabwe has been mining lithium for 60 years and the government estimates that its Chinese-owned Bikita mine, which is located 300 km south of the capital Harare, has about 11 million metric tons of lithium resources.
Last year, Zimbabwe's government banned raw lithium exports to get more value from the mineral. The reason for the ban was to expand output, as other major producers are expected to start operations in Zimbabwe in 2024. Lithium prices in China, the top consumer of the battery metal, have been on a downtrend for much of this year.
Notably, the lithium-ion battery (LiB), a crucial component of EVs, can constitute between a third to half of the EV's total cost. With the surging production of EVs and essential electronics crucial for achieving a zero-carbon emission energy transition, Zimbabwe is rapidly ascending global ranks.
Lithium, which is key for renewable energy storage and is Africa's top lithium producer, is expected to become Zimbabwe's third biggest mineral export after gold and platinum group metals, which registered $2.46 billion and $2.27 billion in export receipts last year. Zimbabwe hopes that the demand for lithium will help revive its ailing economy.
