The pack voltage can be determined by calculating it from the individual cell voltages rather than measured by the total pack voltage sensor. The BMS can be set up to ignore any difference in voltage between the two methods.
This testing can be a bottleneck in the manufacturing process, so test solutions that reduce time or increase test density are highly desirable. One of the most useful measurements for a battery cell or pack is the open circuit voltage (OCV), but the considerations that must be made at the module or pack level differ from the cell level.
Similarly, it is also necessary to disable the battery pack if any cell voltage falls below the minimum manufacturer-specified voltage. When a cell remains at an excessively low voltage for an extended period of time, dendrites may form and make it dangerous to operate the cell further.
Generally, a BMS measures bidirectional battery pack current both in charging mode and discharging mode. A method called Coulomb counting uses these measured currents to calculate the SoC and SoH of the battery pack. The magnitude of currents during charging and discharging modes could be drastically different by one or two orders of magnitude.
