AI Customer ServiceAn Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is defined as a piece of electrical equipment which can be used as an immediate power source to the connected load when there is a failure in the main input power source. In a UPS, the energy is generally stored in flywheels, batteries, or super capacitors.
In conclusion, an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) plays a vital role in protecting sensitive devices and providing continuous power in the event of an outage. It safeguards against overvoltage, undervoltage, voltage spikes, frequency fluctuations, and distortion in voltage waveform, ensuring the longevity and proper functioning of equipment.
The on-battery runtime of most uninterruptible power sources is relatively short but sufficient to start a standby power source or properly shut down the protected equipment. Figure below shows Uninterruptible Power Supply.
Controlling sensitive devices such as computers, induction machines, medical equipment, and many other things is of utmost importance for an uninterruptible power supply. Many countries, including Pakistan, rely on UPS during times of energy shortage, using it to store energy in batteries when the main power supply is available.
In any UPS, a Battery Management System (BMS) is necessary which can monitor the battery’s state of charge and discharge, charging current and its voltage. It also protects the battery from overcharging and over discharging. So to safeguard and to increase the lifespan of the battery, the BMS should be used in UPS designs.
For example, the UPS designed for computers can supply power only for some small duration of time when the power goes off but that time is sufficient enough to save files on which the user may be working. So, for obvious reasons, the charge storage ability of any UPS is determined during its design considering its application.
