AI Customer ServiceFor several decades, governing bodies such as the International Fire Code (IFC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and Underwriters Laboratory (UL) have released battery-related fire codes and standards to ensure and improve public health and safety by establishing minimum standards for fire prevention and protection.
The 2018 International Fire Code, Section 608, covers Fire Codes for Energy Storage Systems, specifically Stationary Storage Battery Systems (with permission of the International Code Council).
NFPA has developed over 300 consensus codes and standards, including its NFPA 1 fire code. The NFPA 1 fire code develops fire safety standards through an integrative approach to fire code regulation and hazard management.
Fire codes are important when specifying or reviewing the fire safety of an energy storage system. However, not every situation can or will be covered by the fire codes for energy storage systems.
A good example is NPA 70E. While NFPA 70E is not adopted in all areas as fire code, OSHA may reference NFPA 70E while enforcing the following regulation: Model codes organizations are developed to give state guidelines for adoption of building codes and fire codes.
Battery systems, modules and cells must be protected against external (electrical) fires. Possible measures: Fire alarm system with automatic extinguishing system for electrical risks. The extinguishing agent should ensure zero residue to the protection of the installation.
