AI Customer ServiceBy preconditioning your car’s battery so that it’s up to temperature before you leave, you can reduce these losses and get the maximum range from your EV. Will an electric car work in the winter? Preconditioning your car before charging is also good for the long term health of your battery.
Electric car preconditioning may sound like something you set on your washing machine, but preconditioning has nothing to do with cleaning your EV, it’s about comfort, safety and getting the best from the battery.
Preconditioning is one of the lesser-known but genuinely beneficial features of electric cars. Whether it’s a scorching afternoon in the summer or a freezing morning in winter, preconditioning can make your life easier. Put simply, preconditioning allows you to pre-heat or pre-cool the car’s cabin before you start your journey.
By using the preheat function you’re not just warming the inside either, you’re pre-heating the battery, so it’s at its most efficient temperature as soon as you set off. If you have heated seats (and/or heated steering wheel), using these instead of blasting the heating can be a much more efficient way of keeping warm.
Remember that preconditioning as an aid to efficiency depends to a large extent on whether or not the car is plugged in when the system activates. If the car is plugged in, the preconditioning is done using power from the mains supply and will not draw electricity from the car’s battery. If the car is parked on the street, the opposite is true.
If your EV allows you to precondition the interior without the car being plugged in, you only need to make sure you’ll have enough battery power left afterward to get home or to a charging station. Some EVs also offer a special feature called a “heat pump,” which is a far more efficient way to heat the interior of your car.
