AI Customer ServiceBangladesh’s energy policy framework does not articulate a clear vision for energy storage in the country. Existing planning activities can inform the development of a clear policy framework for energy storage that addresses the many services that storage can provide as well as the full range of storage technologies available.
The technical system characteristics of the Bangladesh power system are favorable for energy storage to reduce the cost of supply during peak demand periods and improve system reliability. Bangladesh’s energy policy framework does not articulate a clear vision for energy storage in the country.
While Bangladesh does not have specific programs or policies to support energy storage deployment, the policies developed to promote private sector investments illustrate how such programs could be implemented in the future.
Demand in the northern Bangladesh substantially falls in winter season and instead, the surplus of energy can be exported to India. The Master Plan was developed by assessing the need of energy and power supply for the future. The plan is not the end of product, but any future potential development can be incorporated and adopted accordingly.
Rules defining activities that require licenses are included in the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission Act, 2003 (BERC Act, 2003) (BERC 2003). Under these rules, a license is required and may be issued to any person for the purpose of energy storage.
To this end, Bangladesh has developed major long-term energy plans such as Power System Master Plan 2016 (PSMP2016) / Revisiting Power System Master Plan 2016 (Revisiting PSMP2016), Energy Efficiency and Conservation Master Plan 2016 (EECMP2016), and Gas Sector Master Plan 2017 (GSMP2017).
