Safety capacitors are also called EMI / RFI suppression capacitors, AC line filter safety capacitors, or X- and Y-rated capacitors. X and Y capacitors not only keep radio frequency noise generated by the device local to that device, but also protect the device from mains noise and high voltage surges.
X/Y Capacitors: Some safety capacitors come with a combination designation, for example, X1/Y2. This simply means that the capacitor can be used as an X1 capacitor in an across-the-line application or as a Y2 capacitor in the line-to-ground portion of the circuit. Tecate offers both X1/Y2 and X2/Y3 multilayer ceramic safety capacitors.
With a working voltage of 400 VAC in line-to-line (Class X)and 250 VAC in line-to-ground (Class Y) applications, these safety capacitors meet the impulse test criteria outlined in IEC Standard 60384. Meeting subclass X1 and Y1 requirements, these devices are certifi ed to withstand impulses up to 4 KV (X1) and 8 KV (Y1) respectively.

Class X safety capacitors are used between the "live" wires carrying the incoming AC current.
