In the aftermath of the refinery fire at the Puma Energy facility on Nicaragua's Pacific coast, oil has slickened nearly one-half of a square mile of the nearby water and soil, said Victor Campos, director of the Humboldt Center, an environmental group.
A further nine people were injured in the blast, some of them seriously. The explosion occurred in the tanker loading area, although the resultant fire did not reach the main fuel storage area where massive tanks store large volumes of petroleum products, including petrol, diesel and jet fuel.
