The adopted filter configuration is a conventional one and is shown in Fig. 6a. Thus, the filter is composed of one CM choke (L C), one DM capacitor (C X), and two CM capacitors (C Y1 and C Y2). Due to the leakage inductance of L C, it also doubles up as two DM inductors in the line and neutral lines.
For applications where the DCM sees very light loading, certain DCM models have increased minimum required external output capacitor values. The higher values depend on the load transients and the trim transients that the application imposes on the DCM.
Numerous standards have been developed that apply to these capacitors, including IEC 60384-14, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) 1414, UL 1283, Canadian standards association (CSA) C22.2 No.1, and CSA 384-14. IEC 60384-14 defines sub-classes of X capacitors by their peak impulse voltage and Y capacitors by their rated voltages and insulation category.
Capacitors will be rated as X1, X2, or X3 for their ability to withstand voltage transients on the AC line. Inductor L is a common mode or current compensated choke with two windings phased as shown.
As a common practice, a high value of the decoupling capacitor network is placed on the DC bus, as shown in Figure 2.2. However, placing a large, bulk decoupling capacitor may not effectively reduce the effect of source impedance, but will adversely increase the required printed circuit board area.
