The purpose of a capacitor is to store charge, and in a parallel-plate capacitor one plate will take on an excess of positive charge while the other becomes more negative.

AI Customer Servicewhere A is the area of the plate . Notice that charges on plate a cannot exert a force on itself, as required by Newton’s third law. Thus, only the electric field due to plate b is considered. At equilibrium the two forces cancel and we have The charges on the plates of a parallel-plate capacitor are of opposite sign, and they attract each other.
A parallel plate capacitor stores charge by creating an electric field between the plates when a voltage is applied. A positive charge accumulates on one plate, while an equal amount of negative charge accumulates on the opposite plate. The amount of charge stored depends on the applied voltage and the capacitance of the capacitor.
Figure 5.2.3 Charged particles interacting inside the two plates of a capacitor. Each plate contains twelve charges interacting via Coulomb force, where one plate contains positive charges and the other contains negative charges.
The dielectric material in a parallel plate capacitor increases its capacitance by reducing the electric field strength for a given amount of charge. This allows more charge to be stored on the plates for a given voltage. Dielectric materials also provide insulation, preventing the plates from coming into direct contact and shorting out.
The simplest example of a capacitor consists of two conducting plates of area A , which are parallel to each other, and separated by a distance d, as shown in Figure 5.1.2. Experiments show that the amount of charge Q stored in a capacitor is linearly proportional to ∆ V , the electric potential difference between the plates. Thus, we may write
During the charging process, the battery does work to remove charges from one plate and deposit them onto the other. Figure 5.4.1 Work is done by an external agent in bringing +dq from the negative plate and depositing the charge on the positive plate. Let the capacitor be initially uncharged.
